Plunging necklines, bare midriffs, mini-shorts: at Notre-Dame de Fourvière in Lyon, the priests have had enough of a perpetual parade of scantily clad summer tourists. According to the rector of the basilica, Mgr Jean-Marie Jouham, visitors are showing "less and less respect" for the religious nature of the church. Some stroll the aisles "as if they were in a train station", deplores the priest. Some dare to enter the basilica laughing, or even smoking, or with their dogs. "We leave our churches wide open, but we request that people be decent," insists Mgr Jouham. "Now, during services, it is necessary to have people who act as greeters and police," sighs the rector. The Basilica of Fourvière, an obligatory tourist destination in Lyon, receives 2.5 million sightseers each year.
