At 106, life has come full circle for Mary Civita Ruggieri. It was very near to the peaceful grounds of Cedar Crest Nursing & Rehab Center that she now calls home that Ruggieri, in her youth, once worked picking strawberries for one cent a basket.
Although she isn’t Rhode Island’s oldest resident—that honor is held by a 108-year-old North Providence woman—Ruggieri has plenty of wisdom to pass on.
“You’ve got to work hard and eat good food—don’t eat junk food,” she says when asked to reveal some of the secrets to living a long, healthy life.
She also draws strength from her deep faith.

Despite all the amenities that make living today much easier than in the early 1900s, Ruggieri feels the added toil of having to make do with what you have helps to build character in ways the youth of today don’t easily understand.
“Today, they live a fast life,” she says. “We had an easy life. We had to work 10 hours a day, and at the end, we were tired.
