Saint of the Day, August 11: Saint Clare

Along with St. Francis, Clare founded the Poor Clares. The order quickly spread throughout Europe; even her mother and sisters joined her. She observed the strictest poverty and austerity. When the soldiers of Frederick II attacked her convent in 1234, Clare held a monstrance before them and they retreated. More info at the Catholic Encyclopedia.
